For the past three days, the sun has risen beyond the sea as a benevolent yellow god returned from distant lands. Clouds that ruled the sky have now retreated to thin purple wisps curling...

I’m standing on the old road that’s been forgotten into the earth, peaceful and undisturbed between the dunes except for paws and footfall. I go higher. The wind launches, whipping the hair protruding from...

We’re Planting 1000 Trees. Will You Plant One?

by Carly Klineberg 0 Comments

Plant one tree? What difference would that make when it’s estimated we’d need 22 trees to offset a return ticket from London to New York? They were my first thoughts when Jackson first told...

OLDER POST

Inspiration

After years of travelling and living in different places, something happened that changed me forever, and brought me back home. Cornwall has become the base for my adventures again as I search for a wilder life, and everything that means to me.

You are a gift, by chance. Like all life. The frag You are a gift, by chance. Like all life. The fragility of circumstance, that it might not have been you is impossible to imagine, because it feels as though you were always meant to be.

I’ve never felt my past, present and future to be so connected as they are now.

Each generation like ripples in a lake, expanding ever outwards, extending their vibration infinitely.

Each treasured song, story, game, touch, lesson or way of loving that we pass on weaves a tapestry of tradition that began before we were born and begins again in our children.

If intergeneration trauma is real, then so is intergenerational love.

Here’s a picture of me pretending to lay the flo Here’s a picture of me pretending to lay the floor in the van... Jackson actually did this bit (surprise!)

For insulation we used the woolly sheets that come in Hello Fresh boxes which work perfectly! I was actually trusted to do this bit...

If anyone has any spare Hello Fresh box insulation (or other) that you’re not sure what to do with and fancy donating instead of chucking them away, we will pay for postage!

Now the floor is down we can finish the insulation, we just need to get the sound damping (silvery tin foil thingies) in place first.

Then it’s time to get the internal framing in place so we can secure the cladding - definitely another job I need to help with so I need to brush up on my handywoman skills because the most I’ve ever made from wood is a mini totem poll in year 7 DT class.

As we’re going for a minimalist rather than a rustic look so it’s really important everything looks neat and is fitted quite precisely 🧐
The windows are in the van - almost... The bloke The windows are in the van - almost... The bloke dropped and smashed one of them so has to come back another day.
We got an opening window in the right hand side, one opposite in the door and one in the back
Jackson also cut out the bulkhead (this is where we’re fitting the sink, cooker and fridge). The floor is next!
For around 7 years now I’ve been trying to only For around 7 years now I’ve been trying to only wear or purchase skincare, clothing and home products made from 100% natural materials or ingredients. This is for several reasons. 1) because it feels nicer against my skin and doesn’t make me feel sweaty 2) I hate the idea of washing micro plastics into the water system 3) I think they last longer and look nicer in the long run. I know that natural materials aren’t always sustainable, and are sometimes grown, treated or processes with harmful chemicals (like bamboo fibre or cotton clothing can sometimes be), so I’m also trying to make sure I choose ones that are organic (like organic cotton) or made from higher welfare animals bread for wool. I’d say I stick to this rule 95% of the time - this hat I’m wearing, for example, has some man made fibre, but I’m not someone who could ever militantly stick to a resolution 100% of the time! BUT after watching Dark Water on NETFLIX I’m absolutely horrified about what is used in some home products like cosmetics carpets and furniture ☹️ I’m also even more disturbed to learn that women absorb these chemicals into their breast milk 🤮(apparently most nursing women will have traces of these chemicals in their milk because they’re so prevalent in our clothing and furniture!) which has made me more determined than ever to avoid plastic or chemically treated fabric. Now I have Noa I’m determined to make some more changes in the home, including making some or my own cleaning products (the more eco friendly products sold in supermarkets like Ecover actually irritate my skin due to some of their replacement ingredients) - If anyone can recommend companies that sell home products that don’t contain VOC’s - or any natural products from cleaning to clothing to skincare etc then let me know as I’m making a BIG list of them for a blog post! #naturalisbest #chemicalfree #plasticfree

We bought another van for conversion numero 2!! No We bought another van for conversion numero 2!! Not this one, this is the first one ☝️ featured on @ckarlsberg and A Wilder Life Blog - and what a meshugana palaver that was (but a fun one) so we thought we’d do it again! We really want to get out and about with Noa and explore at the weekends and after work now Jackson finally has his weekends free since giving up courses and repairs. It’s also kind of hard getting out the house sometimes with a babe, and with constant lockdowns we can’t ever stay out too long as there’s nowhere we can go inside to change Noa - and I don’t fancy sitting breastfeeding her outside in a rainstorm either. So, being able to set out for the day with everything we need means we can spend more time outdoors and less time trying to line everything up in a row so we get out during a good weather window. We’re going to try to complete the fit out in January if we possibly can, but although we are now skilled van converters (😅😂) and have lots of ideas meticulously drawn out on the back of envelopes, we’re happy to get any tips (ps thanks @tommy3.11 for your help so far)
